Day 17...the accessories

It's almost Done!

The Lamp, it was a great find at a sweet antique shop called "Treasures of the Heart". Barb, the owner madethe lamp shade out of a doilie, I have know idea how to spell that. She made it just for Bay which was so sweet. Thank you Barb. The night table is from Ikea, for only $20.00.

The other side table came from that same shop "Treasures of the Heart". I spray painted it cream and antiqued it with silver. It had inlaid wood on the top so I taped off the inlat a sprayed it black. The standing lamp came from Goodwill and guess what? I spray painted with a black paint that has a hammered finish so it looks really old. I just purchased a stock pendant shade from Home Depot for $6.00. The old suitcase is also from "Treasures of the Heart" and it is an actual vintage beauty kit case. Baylee loves this little shop.

Draperies are from Fred Meyer, they were purchased at a 50% off sale so I got them both for $30.oo. The sheers are from Ikea, hold on to your shorts 1.99 for the pair. I'm not kidding!

The dress form was from Ross (mess for less) for $30.00 as was the drapery rod for 9.99.

We just have a bit left if you didn't notice, the chandelier was too low and the black oval frame had no picture in it. We are thinking about putting a mirror in it. I would also like to find a black pillow for her bed.

Day 16

This canopy was an all around easier project then that stupid headboard, with the crooked buttons! For starters I got to use my chop saw and my table saw. Basically I built a box and covered it with the leftover headboard fabric that I hate. It wasn't too bad because there were no curves in the box. Then I hemmed the leftover toile fabric and stapled it on. I covered the staples with left over trim which I hot glued on. I try and do as little sewing as possible seeing how I'm much better with a miter saw than a sewing machine :)

I then mounted this bad boy or girl (if you prefer) right to the ceiling with L brackets. I stapled the curtains up on the inside. All done. It actually took longer to make than I made it sound but compared to that ridiculous crooked headboard, anything is easy.

OOOH here is the good part total cost for Canopy $6.50 YES! How did I do that your wondering? I will tell you. I bought a 2X2 for 1.50 and had the scraps of wood and fabric. The curtains were only $4.99 a pair at Ikea*.

* side note (I've always wanted to do that) Ikea doesn't hem thier curtains so they come extra long which makes them perfect for things like this. Today was a good day.

Day 15 The Bedding

Here is the bedding we ordered for Baylee's room, from the "Shabby Chic" line at Target. It's pretty hard to find in stock and pretty expensive It's a duvet and shams set that runs about $90.00 for a queen. I got it on ebay for 60.00 + 10.00 shipping. I just purchased an inexpensive white comforter at Target for $20.00. The bed skirt was $17.00 and $12.oo for the trim I sewed on to embellish it. The white pillow came from Colby Cottage ( little antique shop here) and the headboard of course I made. You can catch a glimpse of the white with black embroidery sheets I got for a bargain at "Big Lots" for $20.00. Who knew?

Okay The headboard:

This was very challenging to make. I used butcher paper to draw a template. I folded it in half to get each side exact. I traced it out on 3/8 inch plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw. Sanded the edges. I cut out the foam with a serrated knife. Then the hard part starts!

This fabric which I thought would be great to work with because it was so thick and sturdy was terrible! For starters it has a pattern which needed to be lined up perfectly but wasn't the first time around or the second; for that matter. (good thing I used my hand stapler ad not my air one) Secondly it has no give so trying to get it around those corners was very hard. It also frays. I seriously hate this fabric.

In all my headboard experiences I found that using an air stapler to make the button holes works great. Then you just hot glue the buttons in. Well this worked great the first few times. Then the fabric just started pulling out. It wouldn't hold. I tried turning down the compression, that didn't work. I tried using a more dense fabric on top of the other fabric, that didn't work. Then I tried hot gluing the denser fabric on top of the other fabric, that worked once. Therefore...back to the old standby drilling a hole through the back, running a needle with thick string through the hole and the foam and the fabric, then through the button, then back through the fabric, foam and find your way back to the hole you drilled and tie it off with a washer. UGH! Did I mention that I hate this fabric? I did this entire project on my kitchen table which I did not notice was dirty. YOu guessed it the headboard got dirty. It was lovely. After all was said and done I HAD to mount it that night. Remember I said it was crooked? It wasn't the only thing! So are the bottom buttons. They drift slowly downward on the right side. Thank God for pillows.

Total headboard price $80.00, the foam was $45.00, fabric and buttons were 20.00 and the plywood was 12.00. Total cost for her bedding 130.00. Day 15 ends with a whopping $210.00. It seems like a lot for a sassy teenagers bed doesn't it.

Well I have been busy. Yesterday I finished the headboard but you don't get a picture yet.. We decided to wall mount it and it's crooked. So you have to wait until it's straight. Besides it was a complete nightmare to make. I can't even go into yet because it was so stressful I just want to put it behind me.

Just a little side note... I started at around 10:00 am and finished around 10:30 pm. Of coarse I didn't spend that much time on it. I did take a break to clean my kitchen, make nacho dip, guacamole, and salsa for my girls' dance team sleep over that naturally took place here. I also added in the time it took my husband and I to mount the headboard crooked. So now your asking "how many Huff's does it take to mount a headboard?" I will let you know when it's done right.

Today I made the pillows and a cushion for her bench. I will give you a picture of that because it turned out really cute.

I purchased the cushion at Goodwill for $7:00 and recovered it. The fabric, trim and pillow forms were $40.00. The bench was a bargain at Ross for $75.00 (ouch, but look at it sooo cute). Then the throw pillow from Homegoods $17.00 (00ps another ouch) For a grand total of $139.00. Uh- oh. Hope the hubby doesn't see that.

The bedroom is taking shape and looking pretty cute in spite of the white walls :)
